Former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, the leader of the State of Law alliance, stated today, Tuesday, to US Ambassador to Iraq Elena Romanski, Iraq’s preparedness to hold municipal elections.
In a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, his media office stated that Al-Maliki received Romanski in his office today, explaining that at the start of the meeting, Ambassador Romanski congratulated Al-Maliki on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Iraq, wishing the Iraqi people further progress and prosperity.
According to the statement, the two sides discussed the future of bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as Iraq’s participation in recent United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York and Baghdad’s eagerness to actively participate in international forums, communicate, and maintain its relationship with the international community.
The State of Law coalition’s leader emphasized that Iraq aspires to balanced relations with all countries around the world based on cooperation and respect for common interests, and that Iraq is preparing to hold transparent and credible local elections with the goal of restoring local governments’ effectiveness so that they can provide services to citizens.
According to a statement from Al-Maliki’s media office, the American Ambassador reiterated her country’s support for Iraq’s stability, emphasizing the need of continuing to provide the required assistance to Iraqis under the strategic framework agreed between the two nations.
